This impressive authentic French castle near Lake Madine was first built in the 9th century and has a wealth of history hidden within the walls, the unique architecture of the château and the historical artefacts can be clearly seen. Named after the 9th century Bishop of Verdun who built a fortress on the rocky promontory overlooking the 'plaine de la Woevre', the main architectural features stem from the 16th century when it was built up from the ruins Cardinal Richelieu had left behind.

Inside

  • Style: Elegance personified, this authentic Gothic style chateau offers room upon room of original stone pillars adjoined with decorative church style windows throwing natural light upon the grand dining rooms and sumptuous suites. The grand open mantle within 'La Salle de Burgraves' beckons you to the relaxing sofas for a fireside nightcap or a pre-dinner apperitif. Draped style curtains and rich tapestries soften the stone walls.
  • Bedrooms: Bedroom one can be found on the ground floor whilst the other five bedrooms are on the upper floor. All bedrooms are en suite with Victorian style baths, generous wardrobes and dressing tables. Each room enjoys breathtaking garden and valley views from the comfort of relaxing armchairs. The Bridal suite - located in the upper tower - can be adjoined to create a family room for four guests.
  • Bathrooms: all of the bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms with Victorian style baths.
  • For Relaxation: At the far end of Salle be Burgraves there is a magnificent large open log fireplace surrounded by comfortable sofas and welcoming armchairs, the perfect pre dinner meeting place. Two smaller additional rooms both boast real open fires with a more intimate feel. The walls are beautifully decorated with original paintings by Louise Cottin.
  • For Recreation:Plenty of game tables cn be found for that long standing game of bridge, backgammon or dominoes challenge.

Outside

Arrive through the grand entrance and absorb the sheer grandure of Bishops Fortress. The forests surrounding the chateau are the source of local delicacies such as wild boar, rabbits and mushrooms, the fortress offer truffle hunting as part of their activity programme. The grounds of the chateau cover 13500msq with outstanding views over the valley and enviable gardens. In the centre of the grounds is a ornate fountain and flowing pond which is decorated for special occasions. Enjoy a game of croquet on the lawn, or even arrange a hot air balloon ride to really get a birds eye view of the valley and beyond.

Food and Wine

  • DIY: The house is only available on a self-catered basis by prior arrangement. There are tea and coffee making facilities within the rooms. The expansive dining room is the perfect location for a lavish dinner.
  • In House Cuisine:Breakfast can be arranged at a charge of 15€ per person. Buffets can also be arranged for afternoons or evenings. Great recommended caterers can be arranged using the finest of local fare.
  • Eating out: Just 500m from the house are the lovely restaurants of Le Patio, Restaurant Lair du Moulin and Restaurant Lac de Madine. Coq Hardi Restaurant in Verdun combines excellent service with a varied menu and is approx 30 mins away.

  • By train: The fast train from Charles de Gaules airport in Paris takes 1 hr 20. The station is 20 minutes by car to the Fortress.

Lake Madine is situated just 8km for the château where you will find a host of both land and water sports, try your hand at horseriding, golf, sailing, archery, tennis, fishing, windsurfing, mountain biking, clay pigeon shooting and hunting.

The Bishops Chateau can be found 33km from Metz in the heart of the Lorraine region. Metz city is know by the locals as the 'city of light' due to its magnificent illuminations which highlight the architecture of the ancient buildings and churches.
